How to Prevent Frozen Plumbing Pipes

Freezing temperatures can be dangerous for your outdoor & indoor plumbing.

Outdoor plumbing is exposed to hazardous weather. Pipes begin to freeze once the temperatures have dropped to

20 degrees fahrenheit, which can cause leaks and bursting pipes.

Helpful tips to prevent pipes from freezing during the winter:

  • Run your faucets at a slow drip with cool or warm water. Cool water is safe to leave on as long as it is warmer than the outdoor temperature.
  • Open all cabinets under sinks & turn up your thermostat. This allows the warm air from inside your home to keep your pipes from freezing.
  • Keep your garage doors closed as much as possible. Many times there are water supply lines in garages. By closing the doors this will prevent the freezing air from coming in and causing any damage to the pipes.
  • Check for air leaks. If you do come across an air leak be sure to use caulk or insulation. All it takes is one small opening to allow enough cold air inside to freeze your pipes.

Keep a close eye on the overnight temps in your area

Warning: Below Freezing Temperatures... Don't let your pipes get too cold!

It is important to regularly check your weather app for both day and night temperatures near you. Also be sure to take the wind chill into consideration as well, it can make your pipes even colder.
